Standard measurements for Australian kitchen benchtops
Kitchen bench height
The standard benchtop height is 900mm. However, the kitchen bench height can range from 850mm to 950mm, depending on your stature.
Benchtop depth
The standard depth of a benchtop is 600mm. Having said that, have a look at your fridge’s depth first. If you don’t want the fridge to protrude out of your kitchen row, adjust the depth of your benchtop accordingly. See the standard fridge dimensions below.
Benchtop thickness
Even though traditional engineered stone benchtops are banned, there are still plenty of alternative materials available to choose from.
- Natural stone
- Porcelain, such as Caesarstone
- Ultracompact porcelain surfaces, such as Dekton
- Recycled glass, such as Quantum Quartz
Benchtop materials are often available in 20mm. The choice of benchtop thickness, whether 20mm or a multiple thereof, ultimately depends on your personal preference.
For a tighter budget, we recommend a kitchen benchtop with a laminate finish from Polytec, for instance. The average thickness of the laminate benchtop is 33mm.

Kitchen island bench distance
Kitchen islands remain the most popular choice in kitchen layouts. For installation, allow approximately 1200mm of clearance between the kitchen row and the island bench. Because if this space is too narrow, it becomes awkward when more than one person is working in the kitchen, or the kids are running around your legs. On the other hand, if the kitchen island is installed too far apart, it becomes less efficient to work in.
Island bench sizes
Your kitchen island bench can be as large as your space allows. That said, the only restrictions are the benchtop slab’s length and width if you opt for a porcelain or recycled-glass bench. The standard slab size is 3060mm by 1440mm, but some suppliers offer oversized jumbo slabs, eliminating the need for an unsightly joint between two slabs.
A good island width is 1200mm, especially if you plan to place some barstools on the other side. In this case, don’t forget to accommodate the necessary legroom as outlined below.
Standard dimensions for Australian kitchen island bench with seating
An island bench is a great place to sit on barstools for breakfast or a snack. In this case, allow 300mm of legroom underneath the benchtop to sit comfortably. Most importantly, you should check with your kitchen manufacturer how large an unsupported benchtop overhang is allowed for your chosen material.
Island bench walkway
Additionally, plan a 1000mm-wide walkway on either side of the island bench to provide sufficient space for people to move around without turning sideways.
Fridge sizes
The sizes of fridges vary significantly. Therefore, start your kitchen design by selecting your preferred fridge and noting its exact dimensions. As a rule of thumb, a single-door fridge is about 800mm wide and 780mm deep. A French-door fridge with a double door is approximately 1200mm wide and 850mm deep. Additionally, check the manual for your fridge’s required ventilation space and incorporate it into your planning.
Oven sizes
Whether you choose an oven built into the wall at eye level or an under-bench oven, the standard width is 600mm. Additionally, standard options include 700mm and 900mm, which are ideal for large families and entertaining guests.
Standard measurements for Australian kitchen overhead cupboards
The clearance between the benchtop and overhead cupboards is at least 600mm. However, you must allow at least 650mm to install a gas cooktop. Read the manual of the cooktop and rangehood manufacturers and follow their requirements. If uncertain, please check with a licensed electrician for your family’s safety.
Dishwasher sizes
There are standard dimensions for Australian kitchen dishwashers and dish drawers. They are usually 600mm wide but also come in a narrower 450mm version, suitable for an apartment or studio.
Sink sizes for kitchen
Sinks come in all shapes and sizes. For example, allow for a double sink 800mm in length and 480mm in width, plus a drainage area on the benchtop. The sink depth is about 200mm.
If you plan your kitchen sink with a single bowl, allow for a length of 550mm and a width of around 500mm.
Standard dimensions for Australian kitchen kickboard
Kickboard height is usually between 90mm and 150mm and set back from the cabinet’s carcass by around 50mm.
