What is not to love about timber floors? Timber is long lasting, hard wearing and brings this natural texture into our houses.
Solid timber versus engineered timber floor
If you’re tossing up whether to choose a solid timber floor or an engineered timber floor, have a look at this short video which explains the pros and cons of those.
If you’re not keen on watching a video, just keep on reading. Will guide you through the attributes of solid and engineered timber floor in the following.
Let’s start with solid timber
Have a look at the Spotted Gum sample below. You can see that it is solid timber throughout. There is no other wood mixed in.
Sand back solid timber floors
When your solid timber floor shows wear and tear a couple of years into the future, you are able to sand it back. This will expose the undamaged timber below. And with a new sealer on top, your floor will look like new again.
How much is solid timber floor
For solid timber flooring allow roughly between $180 and $260 per square metre. This includes supply and install. So, it doesn’t come cheap, but it may well be worth it.
How to install a solid timber floor
Talking about installation, be aware that a solid timber floor needs a floor underneath for support. This subfloor can be constructed with timber joists.
Subfloor may raise floor level
Those joists will raise your overall floor level. That is not a bigger deal when you’re constructing a new house because you can factor that in right from the beginning. But when you’re renovating, you need to cut the bottom of your doors which can be tricky.
Engineered timber floor for renovators
This is the reason why I usually recommend engineered timber floors for renovators.
What is an engineered floor
Engineered floor is often called floating floor, but it means the same. It’s a floor that is made of layers. Lower grade timber at the bottom and your beautiful timber as the top layer.
Engineered timber floor versus laminate
But it’s all real timber. Don’t get mixed up with laminate which is another thing altogether.
How much is engineered timber flooring
For an engineered timber you need to allow around $100 to $200 per square metre, supply and install. You can choose from beautiful Australian species timber as well as from imported timber such as walnut or oak.
Consider bamboo, vinyl and laminate
If you believe, timber floor is not for you, check out the flooring that pretends to be timber. This could be bamboo which is a grass. Other popular choices are laminate and vinyl in a timber look.
